Recent Observations: “Lord of the Galaxy”

I’ve been thinking about imaging the Milky Way with a person in the foreground in some dramatic pose. Well, here it is. Not the greatest, but an interesting combination of the Milky Way background and a person in the foreground.

As we head into the autumn the brighter part of the Milky Way is only visible for a short time in the evening. By the end of August (at 45 North) it is past it’s peak in the South and starting to head back down by the time the sun has set. At the same time this year we had a nearly full moon to contend with as well. Of course the sky needs to be very clear.

I had some visitors at the Cottage and asked them to help out. We carefully timed this shot - we managed to catch a short period of time after it was sufficiently dark in the evening and just before a bright moon rose. The Milky Way wasn’t perfectly aligned, but it seems okay.

The image is produced by lining up the Galaxy and then having a person pose in the foreground. We then “paint” the foreground with light – not too much and not too little. We fumbled around a bit but this seemed a good balance.

I suspect we’ll be making a print of this image for the “Lord of the Galaxy” in the foreground.

Milky Way image captured at Lac Teeples on September 2, 2023. Total integration times of up to 4 minutes. Camera was the ZWO ASI-294MC, with the Canon EFS 24mm pancake lens. The camera was mounted on a small tracking tripod oriented north by compass. Subframes were 32 seconds long. A ZWO duo-band filter was used to enhance the red nebulae. Shot from the cottage shore line looking due South.
